Gobik Hyder

Review and opinion of the GOBIK Hyder 2023 long jersey

Hyder is a new long jersey from Gobik, presented in the COLD24 autumn-winter collection. It replaces an old acquaintance, the Cobble, a real reference in the Spanish manufacturer’s range for the coldest months of the year. It comes in a multitude of colors and in 3 versions: standard, Blend and Superhyder.

Versatility with style

The long jersey is possibly the garment most used by Spanish cyclists during the winter, especially along the Mediterranean coast and south of the country, with mild winters very similar to California in the United States. Its use together with a vest allows us to increase our thermal protection first thing in the morning, and reduce it if the temperature improves throughout the morning. In other colder latitudes it is also common to wear it as a second layer, to complement a jacket. In any case we are talking about a versatile piece that can be complemented with base layers and outer layers.

Hyder has the difficult task of replacing Cobble, a jersey that all of us who are familiar with the Gobik range know very well, as it has been the reference piece in the winter range for many years. For this task, the manufacturer has done its homework well, first of all with a very successful color range in line with the current trend in high-end cycling. Sober and elegant colors take the brand’s style up a notch and make it possible to create beautiful combinations with the new Absolute bib shorts. Secondly, by creating 3 versions of the product that allow us to customize our choice, looking for more style (Blend) or more thermal protection (Superhyder).

Pacer + Cobble Heritage

We have said that Hyder comes to replace Cobble, and indeed it is, because the latter is no longer offered in the new Cold Series collection, but we could say that it is also a fusion with Pacer (lighter jersey), as it inherits technical details such as ventilation openings in the armpits, and the fourth side mesh pocket. It also has a plush inner padding of lower grammage than Cobble, although very little, but being strict it would be located between Pacer and Cobble, pulling more to the latter.

It also features new details, such as a new elastic waistband and a back mesh pocket. The first is micro-siliconed inside and runs around our entire perimeter, providing a very elegant aesthetic, without the classic wrinkles, and a perfect fit. The second allows us to carry our cell phone more ventilated, minimizing condensation on it that occurs in winter by the shock of temperatures. But keep in mind that this pocket does not have GRS system so if our route is MTB or technical gravel, it will be better to use the other pair of pockets, which does have retention system.

We also want to highlight the fourth pocket, also made of mesh and located on the side, a perfect place to store the wrappers of the nutrition products that we consume.

Blend Version

As mentioned above, Hyder is available in several versions, the Blend being the most elegant and stylish. The use of a combination of several fabrics, elevates its aesthetics and gives it a premium look that can be appreciated at first glance. The upper part is made of the same fabric as the standard Hyder, with a «harder» feel that allows for more protection in the sleeve, shoulder and chest area. The lower part uses a solid polyamide fabric, the same as the Solid versions of Pacer that are so popular for their fantastic elasticity and comfort. Finally, the zipper area on the chest receives a third melange fabric that gives it a mottled and shiny look.

Superhyder Version

For those who do not want to use a vest or jacket, the brand offers this version, the most technical of the Hyder range, thanks to the incorporation of an eVent® DVstretch™ membrane that provides resistance to wind and light rain. Superhyder allows us to be insulated from the cold and evaporate sweat optimally if we increase our effort, thanks to the combination of the good breathability of the front membrane together with a more ventilated back.

A differentiating detail is that in this model we do have 3 back pockets with GRS system, keeping the 4th side mesh pocket.

On Route

Accustomed to using Cobble on most winter routes, we immediately appreciate the differences in Hyder when we hold it in our hands. The first thing that stands out is its aesthetics, clearly a step ahead of the previous model. The new elastic waistband gives it a lot of style, adjusting perfectly to our body without the unsightly wrinkles of the past. The colors are also a plus, for those of us who appreciate sobriety and elegant combinations.

The fit is typical Gobik, close-fitting and aerodynamic, but we are already familiar with this brand. Hyder is a glove that fits our body like a second layer. In my case, I wear one size up from the summer models, because I like to be able to have room to wear an undershirt or base layer like the Limber Skin.

I have tested the garment on many autumn routes with temperatures between 10 and 15 ºC. First thing in the morning I complement it with a vest (the new Vector looks great on it), which I can store in its back pockets when the weather improves. Hyder feels good in this environment. I’m not cold, and with good gloves like the Finder (soft) or Bora (cooler), I get a perfect combination that doesn’t weigh me down if the route is demanding and we get intense. This is also helped by the new ventilation openings in the armpits, which I liked so much in the Pacer. This area is the one that produces the most moisture and being able to transpire better, we avoid internal humidity and subsequent cold if we lower the intensity.

The Blend version is a plus in style and comfort. The solid fabric area adapts better to the body and is more elastic. If you are looking for a differentiating aesthetic, it should definitely be your choice.

Finally Superhyder, the most technical, which saves us the use of vest for those who do not like to dress in layers. If you use it together with a merino base layer and good gloves like the Nuuk, you will have a combination for the whole winter, even in really low temperatures.

Summary

The followers of the brand can rest assured, we lose Cobble, but with Hyder we gain a worthy replacement, which raises the qualities of our old acquaintance to a higher level in style and technique. Undoubtedly the new Gobik reference for the coming years.
